Nepal: Major power cuts cause unrest in Nepal

The government in Nepal has announced major power cuts to battle the growing shortage of electricity in the country. From this week, supplies will be cut off to homes and businesses for a staggering 16 hours a day. Industries are running on less than 20 percent of their capacity. Nepal's Maoist government has declared a "national power crisis."

Nepal: Load shedding hits eco-friendly tempos

Electric tempo entrepreneurs on Tuesday asked the government to help keep their eco-friendly vehicles running by providing electricity to charge batteries.

Organising a press meet in the capital, they urged the government to make arrangements for regular power supply to ensure the continuation of their eco-friendly vehicles and gave the government four alternatives to solve the problem.

Philippines: Shortage in auto LPG supply affects taxis

The Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board on Wednesday said a number of taxi companies have complained that they may be forced to cut down on their operations due to a shortage in liquefied petroleum gas for automobiles.

LTFRB Chairman Thomson Lantion said he plans to summon owners of auto LPG stations to corroborate reports of auto LPG shortage being experienced by Metro Manila taxi companies. He said some companies have complained that they no longer know which LPG stations still has supply because of the shortage.

Tanzania: Government scrambles to ease fuel shortage

The Government scrambled yesterday to ease the biting fuel shortage by announcing temporary measures to deliver petrol to dry outlets in Dar es Salaam from last evening.

The move came even as members of the parliamentary committee for agriculture, land and environment threw their weight behind the Government's efforts to control fuel prices.

Europe: No relief for Europe in Russian gas crisis

Russia started pumping gas meant for Europe via Ukraine on Tuesday for the first time in nearly a week, but the European Union said little or no gas was flowing to countries suffering urgent energy shortages.

Russia accused Ukraine of blocking off gas to Europe, but Kiev blamed lack of pressure in the pipeline system and said it could not ship the gas without cutting off several of its own regions.

Nepal: Electric vehicles on warpath against load-shedding

Electric Vehicles Association of Nepal (EVAN) on Tuesday threatened to launch a series of protests should the government fail to make alternative power supply arrangements to keep electric vehicles going.

The threat comes in the wake of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the sole power utility in the country, enforcing 16-hours a day load shedding since Sunday. Operators of electric vehicles, mainly three-wheelers, in Kathmandu complain that the power supply is not adequate for recharging their batteries, and because of this their business worth billions is virtually at the point of closure.

Nepal: Outage takes toll on water supply

Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), the sole supplier of drinking water in the Valley is distributing 10 million litres of water less than the usual every day volume due to lack of electricity to pump ground water.

The daily demand of drinking water inside the Valley is 230 million litres, whereas KUKL is now supplying only 110 million litres of water every day, said Richard Austin, managing director of KUKL. It used to supply 120 million litres water before the 16-hour-load-shedding schedule was introduced.

Pakistan: Govt to address energy crisis - CM

The Punjab government is working on various hydropower and coal-powered energy generation projects to remedy the ongoing energy crisis, Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif said on Monday.

He was addressing a meeting at the CM’s Secretariat to review the Punjab Power Generation Policy of 2006. Senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahmed, Planning and Development Chairman Sami Saeed and the finance secretary were also present. Shahbaz said energy talks are being held with China while the Independent Power Producer Forum has visited Punjab and expressed keen interest in investment opportunities in the energy sector.

Phillipines: Pump prices cut, amid LPG woes

Coming off a rollback in pump prices on Tuesday, big oil companies assured the public of adequate supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) amid concerns about dwindling availability of cooking gas and autogas in the market.

Bobby Kanapi, spokesman for Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., told a press conference that the company’s customers could be assured of continued supply of LPG products despite tightness in supply.

“Despite supply tightness in Asia-Pacific, our Shellane customers can be assured of continued supply,” he said. Shellane is a brandname of Pilipinas Shell for its LPG.

Tanzania’s government is investigating fuel shortages at some gasoline stations in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, the Citizen reported, citing Deputy Energy Minister Adam Malima.

A FUEL crisis has hit many parts of Dar es Salaam Region with motorists accusing oil companies of hoarding supplies to create an artificial shortage of the essential commodity.

There have been scenes of desperation and chaos at many petrol stations in the city for the past few days as motorists are turned away apparently because fuel stocks have run out.
