China: July power shortfall for China's State Grid 16 GW

Power shortages across China's State Grid Corp network reached a peak in mid-July of 16.15 gigawatts (GW), well above previous government forecasts for the entire nation, the official Xinhua agency said on Wednesday.

By August 5, coal stocks at 219 plants connected to the grid had fallen below the level needed to guarantee seven days of generation, affecting a total 180 GW of installed capacity -- or around a quarter of China's total, the report added.

China: China's Hubei Province Starts Rationing Electricity on Shortages of Coal

China's central province of Hubei, which has the world's largest hydropower station, has started rationing electricity to meet demand during the Olympics and the summer after fuel supplies fell.

The provincial government decided to cut power supplies to the capital city of Wuhan by 34 percent, the city of Huangshi by 31 percent and Huanggang by 16 percent, the local economic commission said in a statement posted on its Web site.

Vietnam: Electricity shortages leave blackouts across nation

The EVN announced on Monday that the country’s maximal electricity consumption was estimated to increase to 12,000-12,500 MW per day, while the EVN’s electricity system could supply just 11,000 MW. As a result, the country has been running short by between 1,000 and 1,500 MW during peak hours.

Pakistan: Gas supply position to be worse in January 2009

The country is likely to face serious gas shortage in the upcoming winter season and the shortfall has been estimated at 1083 mmcfd in the month of January, official sources told Daily Times Saturday.

Total demand in the month of January is projected to be 4132 mmcfd against the supply of 3049 mmcfd, leaving a shortfall of over a 1000 mmcfd in peak season.
