India: Mounting losses threaten TNEB’s viability

As Tamil Nadu's power managers struggle desperately to cope with an acute electricity shortage, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) is faced with another huge problem – its messy financial situation which is threatening its viability.

Reliable sources in the TNEB told The Times of India that its losses, mounting since 2005-06, stand at about Rs 9,000 crore. Officials are now worried that if the government fails to hike the power tariff by next year, the Board would have to dip into capital funds to meet its revenue expenditure.

Over the past month, a kerosene shortage has hit Lombok Island including the West Nusa Tenggara capital, Mataram, forcing residents to queue for kerosene rations at local distribution posts.

Near Gunungsari market in West Lombok, people were seen queuing since early in Tuesday morning, some since Monday evening, to get their maximum five-liter allowance.

Nigeria: Nigeria's power generation down by two thirds

Power generation in Nigeria has fallen to 1,000 megawatts from an average of 3,000 as a result of a shortage of gas supplies, the state-run power company PHCN said Tuesday.

The Power Holding Company of Nigeria said in a statement that there had been a shortfall in deliveries from the Nigerian Gas Company to the Egbin and Sapele power plants in recent months.

In a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja , the management of the company said it was now losing about 1,000 mega watts of generation capacity from the national grid as Sapale power station was still shut down while Egbin capacity had dropped further.
