Australia: More power blackouts hit Brisbane's north

Thousands of homes on Brisbane's northside are without power for the second time today, as Energex crews work to restore a malfunctioning mains powerline in Mango Hill.

Power was briefly restored to 4250 residences in Girffin, Petrie, Lawnton and Murumba Downs this morning, after a fault on the main electricty line was repaired.

India: Generation loss of 9 billion units till December due to coal shortage

Generation loss of 9 billion units has taken place till December at various thermal plants of the country due to coal shortages as per Central Electricity Authority (CEA) report.

CEA has expressed deep concern over the prevailing coal supply situation at the coal-based thermal power stations of the country. The depleted coal stock levels are severely affecting the actual generation at such plants.

Pakistan: 30000 tonnes of furnace oil used daily for power generation

Speakers at a seminar on Monday said that Pakistan, despite having an enormous potential for hydal and other alternative sources of power generation, has been consuming 30,000 metric tonnes (MT) of furnace oil daily for running its thermal power generation units.

The seminar on Tariff mechanisation for renewable energy technologies, was organised jointly the Wind Energy Project of the UNDP and the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB).

Pakistan Electric Power Company(PEPCO) Director-General Tahir Basharat Cheema said that the cumulative power generation capacity in the country was 19,500 Megawatts (MW) but at present they had been producing just around 15,000MW.

Botswana: NAMPAADD focuses on investors

Regarding the energy sector, the minister said during the 2009/2010 financial year, government will focus more on the reduction of energy consumption in the industrial sector through energy audit and taking appropriate measures.

"Measures will be taken to reduce electricity consumption in government buildings such as replacement of inefficient lights by energy efficient ones," he said.

The minister, however, noted there is continuous increase in the demand for electricity for the country with the maximum demand for electricity currently being 530 MW. He said the challenge of electricity shortage has given more prominence to energy saving thus various activities to implement the energy saving strategy has been initiated to bridge the gap between demand for and supply of electricity.

China: China power coal inventory on downward trend, regulator

Power coal inventories in China have entered a declining trend since the country's five power giants haven't yet secured any purchasing contracts with coal enterprises. Until Feb. 2, many power plants' coal inventories only could satisfy 21 days' consumption, according to experts from China Electricity Council (CEC).

At present, the power coal inventory for a number of power plants has declined to less than 20 days' consumption. More so, some power plants only have coal inventories for 2-3 days' operation.
