Bangladesh: Bangladesh Power Sector Beset by Plethora of Woes

The power sector experts see no respite from the country's power crisis in the next few years, although the new government announced that they would bring around 750 MW by June and increase power generation to 5000 MW by 2011, as viewed by experts.

Although there is a declared announcement in the Planning Commission's chart that lenders are showing interest in financing various power projects in the country -- upto 700 MW in private sector and another 1,200 MW in public sector, the situation is not the same as the previous political and caretaker governments have failed to tap funds and now the lenders are hit by global recession.

Indonesia: Rolling blackouts continue in West Nusa Tenggara

State electricity company PT PLN's West Nusa Tenggara office has continued applying rolling blackouts of around four hours a day across the province, due to a deficit in supply that hit the region four months ago.

The office's deputy communication manager Lalu Mawardi said Friday there was no certainty when the blackouts could be put to an end, as there was also uncertainty about when the electricity crisis would end.

Airlines face fuel shortage that might interfere with flight schedules after it emerged that the country risks running out of aviation fuel from this week.

Oil marketers are attributing the imminent jet fuel shortage to delay by marketer Gulf Energy in importing the commodity at a time when airlines have nearly consumed the strategic stocks contained in the Kenya Pipeline storage facilities.

Malawi: Malawi’s frequent power supply cuts worsen

Peterson Zembani, the Chief Executive Officer of the troubled Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), the country\’s solo utility supplier, on Monday said that the damage of the boom at Liwonde Barrage and Nkula A Hydroelectric Power screens, has led to frequent blackouts the country has been experiencing in the past two months.

Malawi has been experiencing frequent power interruptions, unplanned blackouts and load shedding since last year.

Speaking when briefing journalists on the situation of electricity supply in the country in Lilongwe on Monday, he said that the damages have forced his company to take emergency measures by shutting down the power station at Nkula A Power Station on the Shire River, the country’s biggest, thereby lessening the power supply in the country.

Pakistan: 12 to 16 hours of load shedding on the cards for summer

Consumers will face load shedding once again, beginning from the month of March, sources in the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) told Daily Times on Sunday.

They said the duration of power outages would be increased gradually and around 12 to 16 hours of load shedding would be conducted in peak summer season.

The PEPCO sources said despite new plants producing around 1,500 megawatts (MW), the company would face around 2,000-2,500MW shortfall.

The Government admitted for the first time that Kenya is in the middle of a worsening energy crisis.

Nigeria: Ateke Claims Damaging Alakiri Gas Supply Line

Wanted leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante Movement(NDVM), Mr Ateke Tom, yesterday said militants had damaged a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) gas pipeline transferring gas from the Alakiri gas station to Port Harcourt Refinery.

The attack, allegedly carried out by NDVM and Niger Delta Patriotic Force, according to a statement from spokesman of the two groups, Tamunokuro Ebitari, was to demonstrate that they can go below sea level to wreak havoc, if provoked.

FOR a long time, many Nigerians across the country have been groaning under the severe scarcity of kerosene; a product commonly used for cooking.

Shortage of the product, which reared its ugly head for the first time several years ago, seemed to have reached its climax recently when a litre sold for between N100 and N150 in several parts of the country.

Investigations by Vanguard Features (VF) last week showed that most petrol stations within the Lagos metropolis had not taken delivery of the product for years.

Peru: Garcia says Peru not in midst of an energy crisis

Peruvian President Alan Garcia worked to calm concerns about the country's growing, if temporary, energy shortage on Wednesday, saying Peru is not in the midst of a crisis.

In the last two weeks, Peru has experienced two blackouts as spiking demand, a shortage of rains and poor infrastructure have combined to crimp power supplies. Garcia has met with energy industry leaders to discuss the problem.
