Paraguay's political crisis threatens to exacerbate fuel shortages in the impoverished landlocked country after Venezuela cut off supplies in response to a Senate vote that removed President Fernando Lugo from office.

Lugo described the vote as a coup and has vowed to fight his position at the summit of Mercosur trade bloc member states, opening this week in the west Argentine resort of Mendoza.
